The grooves in the floor were made by the couch they bought at a thrift store, as a consequence of their preference for enjoying one another’s company there, rather than in the bedroom (and also, one imagines, from the fact that enjoying the company of a superhero can do damage to nearby lamps and other household items, as the couple’s exertions cause the couch to gradually migrate across the hardwood). But one day the couch came to a rest for a good. Several years later, Mrs. Darkness moved out.

LYRICS
The apartment was small
So they painted stars on the ceiling
They glowed in the dark
And gave them this feeling
A feeling of freedom
A feeling of grace
A perfect illusion
A feeling of space
Stars on the ceiling
Grooves in the floor
A look in her eyes
That took years to explore
And the rent was gigantic
But they always paid it somehow
They just had to live in the city
He’s still living there now
A different apartment
A new neighborhood
She moved somewhere else
But she’s doing good
Stars on the ceiling
Grooves in the floor
His hands on her thighs
Devotion they swore
Stars on the ceiling
Grooves in the floor
They couldn’t disguise
They both wanted more

It's the essence of TMJ to follow up a smart song about the need to forge new memories with a killer that grooves on everything great and awful about the 1970s. Brash, confident, and deeply pleasurable -- and its vibe is punctured by the new old b-side's warning "living backwards in time/losing your mind." As always, TMJ has it all ways, beautifully. Alan S
